Automatic Gate Safety: How Entrapment Protection Works

An automatic gate is easy to think of as a convenience, but it's also a heavy, powered machine that moves under its own force near cars, pets and children. That's why an automated gate carries genuine safety obligations — it has to be set up so it can't crush or trap a person. Here's how that protection works, in plain terms.

Force limiting

The first line of defence is the motor itself. A properly set-up gate motor limits the force it applies, so if the gate meets resistance — a car, a person, an obstruction — it stops or reverses rather than driving through. This 'force limiting' is set up at installation and is both a safety measure and what stops a gate destroying itself against an obstruction. A gate that slams shut with real force, or keeps pushing against something in its way, is a gate that hasn't been set up correctly.

Photocells

Photocells are the small lenses you see each side of a driveway. They project an invisible beam across the opening; if something breaks the beam while the gate is closing, the gate stops or reverses. They're the reason a closing gate halts when a car is still in the way. When a gate 'opens fine but won't close', a knocked or dirty photocell is usually why — the gate is doing exactly what it should and refusing to close on what it thinks is an obstruction.

Safety edges

On some gates a safety edge — a pressure-sensitive strip along the leading edge — adds another layer: if the edge touches something, the gate stops. It's a physical backup to the photocells and force limiting, and it's common on larger or heavier gates where the consequences of a strike are greater.

Why you must never disable them

It's tempting, when a gate 'won't close', to bypass the sensor that's stopping it. Don't. That sensor is stopping the gate closing on something for a reason, and disabling it turns a safe gate into a hazard — especially around children and pets. The right fix is to clean or realign the photocell, not to switch it off. If a gate is closing with too much force or ignoring its sensors, it needs setting up properly, not overriding.

Kids, pets and a heavy machine

The reason all of this matters is simple: a driveway gate operates exactly where children play and pets roam, and it's heavy enough to do real harm.
